Reply with quote | #1 | Are you retired? Have nothing holding you down this winter? Own a cedar creek and have a truck to pull it? Are you going away this winter if you live in the cold?
WELL IF YOU SAID YES TO ALL THE ABOVE GET THE CRAP OUT OF TOWN
Never been away for the winter months well once you do so you will say why did I not do this years ago WOW.
If you have nothing to hold you back that is what that Cedar Creek is for go for it gt in the truck and get out of dodge and go to some place warm WOW it sure is fun in the sun knowing it is 20 degrees back home.

Reply with quote | #2 | I really want to, but I would really miss plowing snow, snow shoeing, shooting coyotes, keeping the well from freezing and watching stupid people drive on icy roads. But the day is coming when we'll leave all this behind us and go south for the winter.

Reply with quote | #3 | Steve you did not say no to all the above questions so you can't go south for the winter
Hope you can soon then you can do some surf fishing with us on the beach.
Larry will be down there before me as usual catching them all before we get there.
But I should be in South Carolina in about 9 days for a couple weeks at Black's Fish Camp on the Santee Cooper Lakes

Reply with quote | #5 | How about giving those of us that haven't traveled in the winter with our C.Creeks ..some how you do it and the do's and don'ts ..
We are in MN .. Cold country so we wonder : 1) Can we put the Slide outs out to load the trailer in the cold weather? 2) How do we keep the tanks from freezing ?? a) we have a tank heater switch but have never used it so wondering how to do it or the best way .. 3) Do you wait for a Time when the weather is looking good (like Jan Thaw) and then drive day and night to get to the warm weather ?? We would have a long drive to get to warm weather from where we are.
I am thinking that if the checkbook says okay that we would like to take off the end of Jan. and get away for about 6 weeks ..
How about starting a thread with suggestions from other travelers ..
Thanks everyone We came in from the factory on Oct. 10th and the weather was so cold and miserable that we are really wanting to get away again ..

Reply with quote | #6 | Retired, but not totally free We look after the 87 & 88 y.o. inlaws.
But they are doing well enough that we plan to get out of (the) Dodge and head for the Gulf Coast for Jan/Feb. Phil will make 1 trip home midway through to check on the folks, the house, the mail, etc. while I stay somewhere with the CC and the kitty. Thinking Pensacola maybe, that way it's just a long day and he's home.
We'll head for Bay St. Louis, eventually across FL and then come up the Coast as far as Charleston, SC before heading home.
We are really looking forward to it!

Reply with quote | #7 | Faye and I have been fulltiming for 3 1/2 years now, since retirement. We either sold or gave away everything. We donated all of our winter clothes to the Goodwill. No house to worry about, just the kids and grands in MI that we go see every summer. Our furnace has very few hours on it and we have never winterized our rig or needed the tank heaters. We always have great neighbors and stay at only the nicer parks. We have enjoyed our time together in these last 3 1/2 years more than we ever imagined possible. We wouldn't trade this time for any house anywhere. We will quit only when our health forces us to. We now have friends all over the country. It seems that where ever we are at, we have friends in the area. We would advise anyone to do it.

Reply with quote | #8 | Well leaving for the winter the idea thing to do is leave before it gets freezing!
Yes you can put your slides in and out when it is freezing HOWEVER make sure you keep them closed when stored as snow and ice can build up on top of the slides then you have to get that off before trying to close them.
You slides will work slower when it is cold and you will find it hard to roll up that 50 AMP electric Cord.
What some people and I am doing this year is taking my CC about 400 miles south from here leaving Nov 7th. That is one day away then when we leave Dec 28th we have one day drive to get back to it.
It can snow and freeze in Emporia VA but always that time of the year or usually gets above freezing during the day.
I will blow all the water out of the CC before leaving South Carolina and storing the CC in VA.
You should always have some water in your tanks when turning the tank heaters on. They are thermostatically controlled and will come on and off as needed. You can keep water in your tanks is needed but the tank heaters work on 100 volts so then you are not plugged into shore power they will not be working.
Never let your city water hose hooked up to the CC when it is freezing out fill the fresh water tank and turn the tank heaters on remembering to keep some water in all your tanks when the tank heaters are on.
Most people just carry a couple gallons of water with them till thy get south far enough to put water back in the CC.
Your furnace will work on 12 volts when driving down the road so remember to turn it off. My new CC when the slides are closed they come over the heat vents in the floor and they get hot so I do not think that is good as the bottom of the slides have that black plastic covering on them and I would think that HOT heat would not be to good for that so I do not use my furnace when the slides are closed.
Well I usually like to head south before it gets to cold but this year as said doing what allot of people do taking the trailer south and storing it till we leave.
Hope this helps some I will try and put something together this evening.

Those are some great ideas Bruce .. 400 miles from us would be almost to Kansas City, KS .. so that isn't out of the cold, I don't think and probably not a workable solution for us. We don't have any heat registers under the Slide outs but I still would not run with the Furnace on as too dangerous and then you have the refueling in stations while traveling.
We would have our 4 dogs with us (they are little so not that bad) so still have to make room for them in the truck and etc. otherwise we could put Clothes and etc. in the back seat of the truck ..
I am thinking that we could put clothes in Boxes until we get to warmer climate and then put them in the closet and in the drawers.. (use boxes as they can be thrown away so will not take up room like a suitcase) As for Food .. we could use a cooler for Cold things .. like condiments and misc. that we wanted to bring from home.
I read that LCD TV's Freeze .. so what do you do with your's ?? We lay ours on our bed as we do not have it permanently mounted .. We have 30 amp so the cord should be slightly easier than a 50 amp. Actually I could go now, but that isn't possible, darn .. I just hope that we can do it in Jan. depending on Fuel prices and other costs ..
Thanks Bruce for the ideas and help .. would like to get a good idea of the best way to handle things so when we can go we can work towards a successful trip .. Can never have too many tips or ideas ..

Reply with quote | #10 | Well my LCD TV just has stayed in the trailer but the this will be the 1st year I have had the trailer in the cold for awhile.
It will be i VA so I think or hope it will be ok will just let it in the trailer and see.
We let all our cloths in the trailer and drawers the cold does not hurt them they warm up fast over night when you get back into the trailer.
I will empty the frig and also you have to make sure you take everything out that can freeze like caned goods ect.
As for the TV never thought about it since my Creek has never been in the cold for a long time.
But I will just let it in the CC in VA for the month of Dec till we get back there Dec 28th and head for Texas.
I will have mine in South Carolina for a coupe weeks soon.

Reply with quote | #12 | We still work full-time so staying put in Oklahoma. I do travel frequently and have taken the camper with me/us.
Just returned from a trip that went Altus, OK to Sacramento, Ca to Riverside, CA to Las Cruses, NM and back to Altus in 10 days. Worked three of those days and had grandsons for two of those days.
Another trip we just came back on Tuesday was from Altus, OK to Alliance, NE and back to Altus. Had a funeral to attend (brother-in-law) and used the furnace in Nebraska. Low 30's at night.
Odd... we do most of our camping in the winter, but in cold country!

Reply with quote | #13 | Before you try to open your slides in cold weather make sure they are not frozen. We had freezing rain and temps. one year and did not even attempt to open them. We try to have all summer clothes in trailer before it gets too cold and what is left we can just put on the bed until we stop the 1st night - usually near Sikston, MO. Also, we can get to our coat closet with the slides in so that is available. We also take a 12 v. cooler that we keep lunch fixings and a few other things in (like freezer jam that we must have) and it stays plugged in in a bay while travelling. We don't leave Michigan until the end of Dec. or 1st of Jan. so we never know what to expect. Right now we are having beautiful weather for Nov. with temps. in the 50's and some days near 60. For the last 6 days it has been warmer than the same dates in Oct. Safe travels to all and hope to see some Creekers in Texas.
